During this time of social distancing and spending pretty much all my time time at home, I’ve been happily noticing more birds than ever before. I am fortunate to live in a place that, even though it is urban, is next to a greenbelt with plenty of trees and shrubs providing habitat for a variety birds. That habitat, along with myself and several neighbors who offer a menu of seeds, suet cakes and nectar, make it even more attractive for birds to visit. And of course, with more people staying at home, the resulting quiet makes the dawn chorus of bird calls delightfully crystal clear.
In all the years I’ve lived in this neighborhood, I’ve never seen such a variety of birds— especially in my own yard! Birds I would likely not have seen so close to my home in previous years are now visiting my feeders— as well as enjoying the many native plantings, flowers and birdbaths I’ve added to my yard this year.
Here are some of the bird visitors who are bringing me joy in these uncertain times, reaffirming the value of living in harmony with nature.
