Following is my entry for Susanna Leonard Hill’s Halloweensie Contest. The rules: write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (title not included in the 100 words), using the words pumpkin, broomstick, and creak.
What Goes Bump In the Night?
Jumping from fright, Sarah peered fearfully around the corner to see about the ruckus. As she crept forward, the floor creaked. Sarah froze.
Tiptoeing onto the porch, Sarah nearly tripped over a broom. Where did that come from?
Stepping over the broomstick, Sarah peered into the darkness. She could just make out an eerie orange glow flickering near the bottom step. It was a pumpkin!
Leaping straight up, Sarah jerked around. The shutter over the window, flapping in the wind, slammed into the house.
Whew! Sarah sighed in relief. No scary broomstick-riding witch or haunted pumpkin.
